SIE Episode 2 Mole Day
Просмотров 586Год назад
It’s almost MOLE day! Not a day to celebrate cute little rodents, or a savory chocolate sauce, but a day that recognizes “another” kind of mole. In 2022 falling on a Sunday, Mole Day is celebrated from 6:02am to 6:02 pm on October 23 (10/23). See how our scientists are celebrating MOLE day in this month’s Science is Everywhere. Need a refresher? The mole is equal to exactly 6.02214076 x 1023 an...
Exploring Diffraction - Science is Everywhere
Просмотров 494Год назад
What exactly is Diffraction? Diffraction, coined by Francesco Maria Grimaldi in the 17th century, the term refers to the bending of waves around obstacles and openings. The term diffraction comes from the Latin diffringere, which means ‘to break into pieces’, and quite fittingly describes light breaking into different directions. Diffraction is quite different from a related term, refraction, w...

POGIL is a popular, research-based method of guided inquiry. It relies on teams of students interacting with an activity while an instructor facilitates their learning. As this face-to-face format is not currently possible for most instructors, must we give up on POGIL for now? The answer is "NO!" In this webinar, three experienced POGIL practitioners and authors will introduce the three new PO...

Remember those balls that you'd smack together and make small explosion sounds, "Hand Blasters" I think? We used to turn them into clackers!
thank you professor from 2024!
Can a magnetic stirrer be used, instead of tipping and swirling the flask?
I didn't understand a word because I speak in Spanish and I added subtitles but this helped me a lot with the task I'm going to do, thank you
the light source from the cieling, duhhhh.
My friend accidentally did this while making dinner
fantastic. The only way to improve the experiment is to smash the two balls together *without* the foil, proving that the sparks are only generated when Al is present. ie; A true thermite reaction. This effect is of commercial significance in ship cargo holds where Mg anodes have fallen and impacted rusted surfaces, with the kinetic energy providing the activation energy for the spark and subsequent detonation of the volatile ballast contents.
Looks like a big filthy #ick 🤣
can you loan me your spectrum tubes?
If OH- ion is accumulated at the blue side, then O2 gas is supposed to be produced there. If H+ ion is accumulated at the yellow side, then H2 gas is supposed to be produced there. Remember: these ions are not the only onces that are found at the black and red lead; its just that power of preferential discharge had taken effect.
This is a perfect experiment for my gen chem class. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much. This really helped with finding the right starting points for this reaction as well as providing a simple technique for varying the concentration. But could you please tell us what molarity of HCl you are using.
This guy is so dangerous! Flame Arrestor: Always use a flame arrestor when working with hydrogen gas and open flames. This device prevents a flame from traveling back into the hydrogen source, which could cause a catastrophic explosion.
Cat fur though, dude...? Cat fur..?
So we cannot depend on our eyes for color consentration ?
Love and hybridization 😮😮😮😮 two phenomena unable to explain
I do have a question. I always slightly turn on my oxygen before I light my torch. If I light it with just acetylene I get all this carbon soot and it will really make a mess in a house or a restaurant and it lingers everywhere and won’t go away. So what makes that happen? I think it’s because of incomplete combustion. It is getting secondary air from the atmosphere but probably isn’t hot enough to burn off all the fuel so you’re left with this soot that just hangs around. Am I right?
Thank you so much. This is an awesome explanation. I’ve never understood chemistry. It’s something my mind cannot understand. I am a Heat & air contractor and I’ve used an oxy/acetylene torch for over 20 years and somehow I stumbled across your video. I like filling up milk jugs with my torch and throwing them in a fire! I will get a good flame mixture on my torch and shut off the acetylene bottle to extinguish it without changing my mixture and then I turn the bottle back on and fill the milk jug displacing the air. And when I think it’s filled up I cap it and throw it on the fire! Book! My friend showed me how to remotely use an electronic match. And then I started filling up big trash bags and putting an extension cord with steel wool to short the connections and I connect it to 36 volts on my golf cart. Boom! I never understood how it works but I enjoyed your video.
Could humans urine create ammonia
Black on bottom???
Love this!!!
I remember rubbing/grinding them together to creat fliying soarks. It shortens the ball life tho
Hello Scientist Finn, I have sodium alginate in pieces like the fiber one cereal, would it work still if i dissolve it in say distilled water and then attempt to put it in Calcium Chloride. Thank you for your expertise, Trinidad

Problem is the fact that Flinn doesn't let you buy anything on this table unless you have a school account. Totally stupid. There is no harm in shipping lab grade sodium borate and guar gum to a home address. Too bad for those who are home schooling their children about polymers in an adult setting.
Brilliant idea. 👏. I am just curious if a flash paper can be used to avoid paper residue.
I just look into him, Professor Emeritus Irwin Talesnick (the old guy), and he apparently died on 21 November 2020. 😥 He started off as a High School science teacher in the 1960s and then went into teaching science teachers how to teach science at Queens University in Canada. He was obviously very successful, as shown in the video!
They are not stronger than steel, even under the more optimistic claims we are talking about 150k lbf but more conservative estimates are 3372 lbf. Even in a press it will dent aluminum but barely harm the steel.

The parafin video I watched befor this had exploding and fire. I'm sorely disappointed right now.
I would just use salt, using a carbonate can create emulsions if you intend to grab something not so polar along with the alcohol. This trick works very well for separation of heavier MW alcohols from side products ❤
Good job.
Thanks a lot! Great video.
On the chalkboard is written: Mass of 54.9mL. I think it should read VOLUME of 54.9 mL. Right? In the video the instructor says VOLUME of 54.9 mL. Right?
